Artists
The function of Galapagos Art Space is to take the best, the absolute best, emerged – which is to say after the beginning – artists and grow them to the mid-career point when we deliver them to the stages of St Ann’s Warehouse and BAM. We do this over and over and it’s what we’re missioned to do. Be they performing artists, musicians, ideas-based collectives, trapeze artists, science programming, classical music and opera or cultural entrepreneurs working to remodel the basis and make sustainable cultural New York in a new century – we take pride and responsibility for guiding and growing these important projects. Our resident program is our opportunity as a venue to make a meaningful contribution to the work and career of the artists we hold in residence.
Having so many resident companies is critical for us as a venue that is missioned to bring you – the audience – the best new ideas and artists; as we learn and experience the work of these artists and thinkers on an intimate level we also learn and experience the work in profoundly new ways, and can then contribute – with each new performance by a resident artist – to the success of the show. We learn they like to be stage left but end mid-right, we learn what makes them look spectacular, serious, or whimsical. Our job is to grow their work in every way we can, and we’re proud that we do.
